John Stamos" LIZA Twitter Pic Rules

Not only have we gotten shots of him still playing with the Beach Boys (Maura Tierney caught his last summer gig on Saturday in Boston), but also of him preparing for Broadway's Bye Bye Birdie revival, which begins previews Sept. 10. Pictured, you see Stamos (who'll play Albert opposite Gina Gershon's Rosie) with Nolan Funk (Conrad).
Sadly, we couldn't post our favorite shot – the script he carried with him to today's first official rehearsal. He had dinner with Liza Minnelli on Sunday, so we presume the autograph is authentic. She signed the cover "John — Take no prisoners" then drew an arrow to the next page, where she continued, "and f— the wounded!" Really, we can't wait to see how he tops that. Follow him here.

Liza ~ The Many sides ~ Disco Mix & Acapella!

Liza fan Emilio shares a story about Paris and Liza's "Losing My Mind"!

I have a Losing My Mind story:

It was either late 1989 or early 1990 (can't find my old passport). I was in Paris with my Mom and my best friend. One night, my firend and I we went to Le Palace disco, one of the hottest clubs in Paris.

There was a long line to get in. When we finally got in, the place was huge and the music great. Shortly after 0100 AM, they started playing Losing My Mind. The clubgoers started screaming in delight!!! Up to that point, as it was customary in clubs, they had played the first couple of minutes of a song and mixed it with the following one.

Not with Losing My Mind.

Not only did they play the remix in its entirety, but they re-played the mix again back-to-back FROM BEGINNING TO END!!!

I was so happy I had made it to the club and heard Liza's song!!! It was one of the highlights of my trip to Paris...

First Look: 'Drop Dead' Snags Major Star Power

"Drop Dead Diva" is hands down summer's best new show thanks to its perfect cocktail of wit, charm, heart and brains. And it certainly doesn't hurt that "Diva" has lined up so many amazing guest stars, "Will & Grace" is crying in a corner over losing its crown. The two biggest names lending their star power to the Lifetime series are Liza Minnelli and Paula Abdul.
The "American Idol" judgess appears as herself in a Sept. 13 dream sequence when Jane is feeling a little blue. In swoops Paula, bringing along a few of the inspirational encouragements she perfected on the reality show. Here's hoping they have nothing to do with ripping off Jane's head and hanging it from her rear view mirror!
As for Liza, she continues her small screen hot streak -- "Arrested Development," "Saturday Night Live" -- as a sister-sparring psychic on Sept. 20. But they're just two of the amazing celebs crossing paths with our beloved Jane!

Liza Minnelli at Ventura's Rubicon Theatre with Billy Stritch

Start spreading the news: Liza Minnelli made an appearance last night in Ventura.
We’re not quite sure how she found it – we had no idea people who hang out in New York most of the time had even heard of the coastal city – but there she was, resplendent in black, at the gala premiere of “The Best Is Yet to Come: The Music of Cy Coleman.”
Perhaps it was the blinding light reflected off the sea of sequins outside the Rubicon Theatre that served as a Kleig light marker, leading Liza (we like to think we're on one-name basis with her, kinda like Madonna and Cher) to the 212-seat venue-in-a-former-church on Main Street.
The Oscar-, Emmy-, Tony- and Golden Globe-winning actress quietly made her way into the theater from a side door, slipping past dapper men in tuxes and women bedecked in sequins and furs – Yes, furs. In July. In the 82-degree heat. – to take her seat among Ventura’s sweaty elite.
Liza's connection to the show was simple: Her friend and longtime collaborator Billy Stritch is music director and performer in the revue-style show. So she served as chairwoman of the gala opening.
Audience members with just the right seats could catch a glimpse of Liza bopping her head, clicking her fingers in time to the music and even singing along with the performers on stage: Stritch, Lillias White, Jason Graae, Sally Mayes, David Burnham and Julia Murney. At one point midway through the show after White hit the final note in “The Oldest Profession” from “The Life,” Liza leaped to her feet to give the Tony winner a hearty standing O.
Afterward, nearly 300 people trekked over to the Marriott Ventura Beach Hotel for the opening night party. There, they received a special treat: The guest of honor and her pal Stritch performed “He’s Funny That Way” from her 2009 Tony-winning Broadway show “Liza’s at the Palace.” OK, so “Liza’s at the Marriott” doesn’t quite have the same ring to it, but we're sure no one was complaining.
“The Best Is Yet to Come” runs through Aug. 2. (Sorry, we’re told Liza probably won’t be attending future performances there.) You can read Charles McNulty's review of the production here.

FRIENDS OF LIZA! posted by Liza fan Jenn on Lesbian Icon poll...

I'm really surprised Liza isn't higher up than just 11 (although, take that, Cher! ;)) I'd actually had a conversation about this several months ago, and I hope this is kosher to mention on here. I pointed out that, for as much as Judy had the strong following of gay men (and their loving term Friends of Dorothy), Liza has just as strong a following of lesbians (and yes, speaking firsthand here). So I coined my own similar phrase for us (which has delighted me to no end every time I've seen it put to use properly! :D) - Friends of Liza. I wonder if Liza's aware of us?Love, Jenn
more coments from Liza fan Angie...
Hi Guys,

My thought on this...
I think Liza, Bette and Babs would be # 1, 2 & 3..on the list of
Gay Men's list...not lesbian...just my thought.

But Liza is my NUMBER ONE!

As a lesbian...I don't' agree with this list...not totally.
Here's my list:

Liza Minnelli
Ellen Degeneres
Faith Hill
Martina McBridePink
(the L word ladies): Jennifer Beals, Katherine Moennig
Cher

That's all I can think of at the moment,
I'm sure there are many many more...
Maybe in MY mind, these ladies are my icons
and who I think are so totally gorgeous and hot!

just one more thought I have to tell ya'll.
I was watching an episode of Boston Legal last night,
which by the way is my favorite show...anyway,
to make a long story short,
At the end of the show where Alan and Denny are sitting
on their balcony smoking cigars and drinkin their scotch....
Alan had a gun to his head earlier and they talked about
when that was happening to him, he didn't think about
the people who loved him, he thought about the people HE
loved...and of course Denny says...Me! "no" Alan says,
"it was Liza Minnelli"......

Scene and cut! Priceless!

Lots of Love,
Angie

Liza makes Lesbian Icon poll!

LESBIAN ICONOCLASTS
An international poll has revealed that Angelina Jolie is the ultimate lesbian heroine.
The survey asked 2600 lesbians to rate who they thought are they top lesbian icons and they came up with the following: 1) Jolie; 2) Madonna; 3) Pink; 4) Martina Navratilova; 5) Ellen DeGeneres; 6) Kylie Minogue; 7) Lady Gaga; 8) Annie Lennox; 9) Beyoncé; 10) Germaine Greer; 11) Liza Minnelli; 12) Gwen Stefani; 13) Cher; 14) Janet Jackson; 15) Tori Amos; 16) Britney Spears; 17) Cyndi Lauper; 18) Scarlet Johansson; 19) Sarah Jessica Parker; and 20) Dolly Parton.
That Jolie has topped our dream list is no surprise, we deigned her our Queen back in 1998 when she portrayed real life lesbian super model Gia. The fact that ex-girlfriend Jenny Shimizu can still get headlines from her affair with Jolie is testimony to not just ours, but the whole world’s obsession with Jolie’s sexuality. However, the majority of the other top lesbian heroines are questionable to say the least.
What were some of the poll-ees thinking when they voted for Britney Spears? Are we that shallow that all it took was one staged kiss with Madonna to capture our imagination? Maybe it was the shaved head. Surely it couldn’t be the snatch shots.
Then there is Janet Jackson. Why? What about Sarah Jessica Parker? What a slap in the face to the real Sex and the City lesbian, Cynthia Nixon. Obviously we’ll choose a straight bottle blonde over a ranga lesbian any day. I guess at least Scarlet is a real blonde.
There were clearly some gay men masquerading as lesbians who were polled because – hello – Minogue, Minnelli and CHER! Cher, who went “ballistic” when her daughter Chastity came out. Nice.
As only two real lesbians made the list obviously sexuality is not a priority when choosing a lesbian icon. kd lang, Melissa Etheridge and the Indigo Girls were up for offer but no thanks we’ll take Madonna, Pink and Cyndi Lauper. Rosie O’Donnell came nowhere near making the cut but then again no group wants to claim her, especially lesbians we have successfully managed to ignore the fact that she ever came out. And even though Ellen comes in at number five, where’s her wife? I guess we’re only interested in the big, big names.
Even the one who started it all, Sappho, was nowhere in sight. Great thinkers such as Susan Sontag? No thanks, we’ll take Dolly Parton. Great talents such as Annie Leibowitz or Virginia Woolf? We say ‘Annie and Virginia who?’, and pass them over for Beyonce.
And where were any of the old favourites? Obviously there were some diehard 80s lesbians still pining for Annie Lennox, but where was that other object of lesbian fantasy, Ani Di Franco? It seems we also prefer the old standards in sport too – new breed tennis leso, Amelie Mauresmo, didn’t stand a chance against Navratilova.
The only saving grace was that Paris Hilton didn’t make the list. Word has it she was close though.

Liza Minnelli to Attend Rubicon Theatre Premiere

July 15, 2009

By Karen Lindell, Ventura County Star, Calif.
Jul. 15--The red carpet will be real. The paparazzi will be faux.
And the guest of honor will be a bona fide star.
The Rubicon Theatre Company plans to roll out a red walkway for Liza Minnelli on Sunday, when the singer-actress is scheduled to attend the official press opening of the world premiere of the Ventura theater's latest production, "The Best Is Yet to Come: The Music of Cy Coleman." Minnelli should be used to the red carpet routine -- she's won four Tony Awards, an Emmy, an Oscar and a Grammy.
Karyl Lynn Burns, Rubicon's producing artistic director, said that when Minnelli arrives at around 6 for the 7 p.m. show, kids posing as press photographers and fans attired in Rat Pack wear (because Rat Packers Dean Martin and Frank Sinatra made Coleman's songs famous) will await her.
"We're trying not to take ourselves too seriously," Burns said, laughing.
Minnelli doesn't star in the Rubicon show -- although the Coleman revue's cast and crew have impressive Broadway resumes of their own -- but she's agreed to be honorary chairwoman for the production's opening night gala, which includes the premiere and an after-party with a Rat Pack theme at the Ventura Beach Marriott.
To draw Minnelli to Ventura, timing, geography and show-biz loyalty worked in Rubicon's favor.
The singer, Burns said, was planning to be in the area because she's performing at the Chumash Casino in Santa Ynez on Thursday. More important, however, Billy Stritch, musical director for "The Best Is Yet to Come," is Minnelli's close friend and performing partner. Also, the Coleman show's director, David Zippel, Tony winner for "City of Angels," wrote some of the dialogue for Minnelli's "Liza at the Palace Show," which won a Tony this year for special theatrical event.
Burns said Minnelli, who will toast the cast and say a few words at the after-party, wants the premiere and gala to focus on the show's performers, but "we hope to persuade her to sing one number with Billy."
Although Sunday's performance of "The Best Is Yet to Come" is sold out, the theater is releasing more tickets for the after-party to guests who purchase tickets to the show for another night. Anyone is welcome to attend the red carpet event.
The show runs through Aug. 2. To purchase tickets ($150 for the gala; $39-$65 for regular shows), call 667-2900 or visit http://www.rubicontheatre.org. The Rubicon is at 1006 E. Main St. in downtown Ventura.

“Drop Dead Diva,” shot in Peachtree City, nab, Liza Minnelli, Rosie O’Donnell, Paula Abdul,in guest roles

8:13 am July 8, 2009, by Rodney Ho

PEACHTREE CITY — Paula Abdul, in a black judge’s robe, listens to Jane Bingum’s singing talent and calls it “effortless, passionate,” but then insults her outfit as “monochromatic microfiber.”
“You’re the nice one!” Jane protests. “You tell everyone they look good!”
Abdul will be back in Atlanta soon to critique “American Idol” contestants for season nine, but this sequence was pure fiction. Shot in Peachtree City earlier this week, the “Idol” judge played a spoof of herself in a dream sequence for a new Lifetime dramedy “Drop Dead Diva,” debuting Sunday at 9 p.m.
The show is bit like “Heaven Can Wait” meets “Legally Blonde,” with a elements of “Freaky Friday” and “Ally McBeal” thrown in for good measure.

Deb, a ditzy model, dies and while awaiting her fate at the Pearly Gates, she demands to go back to Earth. She accidentally ends up in the body of Jane Bingham, a lawyer with self-esteem and weight issues.
Fortunately, Deb, played by theater actress Brooke Elliott, maintains Jane’s legal knowledge so she can still function as a lawyer. Her sassy assistant is played by the only big name on the show: comedienne Margaret Cho.
The pilot for “Diva” was shot earlier this year, mostly in Midtown and Decatur. Once Lifetime gave the the show a thumbs up for 13 episodes, it began taping in Peachtree City in April.

The show’s premise may sound goofy, but it confronts serious issues about female body image.
“We are conditioned that beauty comes in a specific package,” said Elliott, who was on the same national tour of “Wicked” as “Idol” runner up Adam Lambert. “That’s not the reality out there. Middle America looks like me. We hope the audience gets that beauty is everywhere and that you don’t have to be size zero to be beautiful.”
While shows such as “Will and Grace” and “30 Rock” became known as guest star magnets, that reputation had to be earned. “Diva” is attracting attention before a single episode has even hit the airwaves. And it’s on a network that a few years ago was known primarily for its oft-mocked “women in peril” films.
But show producers have been showing the pilot around Hollywood circles and the buzz has been so good, they’ve enticed a coterie of big-name stars. Among those who have already flown into Peachtree City to act: Delta Burke (”Designing Women,”), Liza Minnelli, game show host Chuck Woolery, Elliott Gould, Tim Gunn (”Project Runway”) , Kathy Najimy (”Sister Act”), Jorja Fox (”CSI”) and Rosie O’Donnell.
“It’s unheard of,” said co-executive producer Josh Berman, who has similar duties on the hit shows “Bones” and “CSI.” “It’s the most gratifying thing you can imagine as a creator of a show. The first couple of days, writers come up with a list of dream stars. You know you have no money and it never works out. We have literally been able to get every dream actor we’ve wanted for this show.”
While there is a gimmicky aspect to guest stars, the extra publicity is a godsend to hopefully draw an audience beyond the core Lifetime viewer, said Craig Zadan, a co-executive producer whose credits include the film versions of “Hairspray” and “Chicago.”
Lifetime is making a major move into original series and is hoping to amp up its “cool” cred. Already, it has one highly touted series under its belt in “Army Wives.” And after a lengthy court battle, former Bravo stalwart “Project Runway” will debut next month on the network.
Abdul heard about the show through the “Idol” music director, who had a good friend attached to “Diva.” She watched the pilot and wanted in.
“It’s charming as can be,” she said between takes. “It has this magical pixie dust spread all over it. It’s really really well written and very endearing. I don’t know why they picked me because I’m none of that!” (Her episode will air in September.)
Lifetime has also been buoyed by early reviews “It’s hardly a new idea… (b)ut this new show actually makes it work, with both humor and heart,” wrote Star magazine, which gave the show 3.5 stars.
Sony Television built three major set pieces near Peachtree City’s private airport Falcon Field for a show that is supposedly set in Los Angeles: a well-heeled law firm, a decked-out Santa Monica beach pad and a courtroom modeled after a vintage one in Decatur, save for the marble, which is not earthquake-code compliant.
The area may lack palm trees, but the show’s location manager Mitch Harbeson has found places to shoot such as Newnan’s Oak Hill Cemetery and Peachtree City restaurants Thai Spice restaurant and Maguire’s Family and Friends Irish pub.
Taking advantage of improved tax incentives, TV shows and movies have flooded into Georgia. “I love shooting there,” Berman said. “I’d love to shoot everything there. The crews have been wonderful. And we could never do sets like that in Los Angeles. There’s not enough space and everything is so expensive.”
“Diva” employs 120 people, mostly local. The 13 episodes wrap in August.

LIZA ~ next weekend in Southern California...

Psssst. Any Liza fans out there? We have a secret to share.
If you have to ask “Liza who?” then you probably won’t care what we’re about to tell you: The Emmy-, Grammy-, Tony- and Golden Globe-winning performer will be making an appearance in Southern California.
That’s right, Liza’s not at the Palace, Liza’s at the Rubicon. Or she will be next weekend anyway to kick off the opening of “The Best is Yet to Come – The Music of Cy Coleman,” which will have its world premiere at the 206-seat theater in Ventura on July 19.
Coleman, who died in 2004, wrote the music for such shows as “Sweet Charity,” “City of Angels,” “The Life,” “Barnum,” “On the Twentieth Century” and “The Will Rogers Follies.” “The Best is Yet to Come,” devised and directed by Coleman’s friend David Zippel, features performances by Lillias White, Jason Graae, Sally Mayes, David Burnham, Julia Murney and Billy Stritch in a revue-style show with no dialogue.
For those who haven’t figured out who “Liza” is, here’s a clue: Minnelli. The Broadway diva, whose “Liza’s at the Palace” picked up a Tony Award last month for special theatrical event, is serving as the celebrity chairwoman of the Rubicon’s gala event.
Sorry, but tickets for the opening-night show apparently are sold out. We have it on good authority, however, that people willing to shell out $50 can attend the after-party at the Marriott Ventura Beach Hotel, where Minnelli might actually sing a number in honor of Stritch, her longtime collaborator who happens to be the musical director of “The Best is Yet to Come.” The catch is that you also have to buy a ticket to one of the performances to be eligible to purchase a $50 party ticket.
All of this is a fund-raiser for the Rubicon’s new works program. The production of "The Best is Yet to Come" runs through Aug. 2 at the Rubicon Theatre, 1006 E. Main St. in Ventura. For more information or to purchase tickets to the show, go to http://www.rubicontheatre.org/ or call (805) 667-2900.

July 4th Breaking News: Liza's At the Palace to be Filmed at MGM Grand in Las Vegas this September

Saturday, July 4, 2009; Posted: 02:07 PM - by BWW News Desk

BroadwayWorld.com has learned that the Tony-winning (for Best Special Theatrical Event) "Liza's At the Palace" will be filmed this September at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas at the resort's Hollywood Theater. More details will be announced shortly and it's expected that the filming will contain all of the material she performed during her sold-out, Broadway run.
For the first time onstage, in addition to many of her greatest hits, Liza also paid an affectionate salute to her godmother, the late Kay Thompson who was a ground-breaking vocal arranger and musical director/vocal coach at MGM Studios.
Directed by Ron Lewis and supported by a quartet of dynamic singer/dancers, Liza performed musical numbers (with the original vocal arrangements) from Thompson's historic act with The Williams Brothers. Songs include "I Love a Violin," "Clap Yo' Hands," "Jubilee Time," and "Hello Hello."
She was joined by her Broadway co-stars Cortes Alexander, Jim Caruso, Johnny Rodgers and Tiger Martina. The legendary Billy Stritch led the evening on piano as musical director and for those who got to see it, it was certainly an experience that they'll never forget!
The original Broadway cast recording of her incomparable show was released on February 3rd, 2009.
