"The Center for Arts Education reports a correlation between students who live in poverty and lack of arts exposure. Outreach addresses this injustice by serving impoverished New York City teens and makes it possible for students to have access to high quality arts training that is essential to nurturing the next generation of informed, curious, capable citizens who have the resources to reach their fullest potential," Artistic Director, Tom Oppenheim, stated. "We are thrilled that such an esteemed group of talented honorees will join us for Stella by Starlight, a special evening that will have a real affect for hundreds of young people who do not have access to the arts."

Over the years, the Stella by Starlight gala has honored some of the most distinguished artists in the entertainment and media industries. They have included Warren Beatty, Tony Kushner, Martin Sheen, Sidney Lumet, Elaine Stritch, the late Roy Scheider, Ruby Dee, Whoopi Goldberg, the late Ozzie Davis, Liz Smith, and Harold Bloom, as well as other key entertainment, theatrical and business leaders.

Since 1949, The Stella Adler Studio of Acting has been the premier actor training program in New York City and around the country. They have trained thousands of actors and artists, including the likes of Marlon Brando, Robert De Niro, Elaine Stritch, Benicio del Toro, Alvin Ailey, and Salma Hayek. The studio encourages its students to be well-versed in not only theater, art, music and literature, but also to be involved in social, humanitarian and community-related issues.

The Stella Adler Studio of Acting is an acting school based in New York City. The actress and teacher Stella Adler founded the Studio in 1949. Adler founded the Studio on her belief in the seriousness of her art. Adler and the school have trained many of the brilliant actors of our time. LIZA @ Judy's 1961 Caenegie Hall show!

Judy at Carnegie Hall: 50 years later ~ Commemorating Judy Garland’s historic performance at Carnegie Hall

http://goqnotes.com/10771/judy-at-carnegie-hall-50-years-later/comment-page-1/
April 23 will mark the 50th anniversary of what was probably the greatest evening in show business history. Over 3,000 lucky people packed the world-famous Carnegie Hall in New York City to see Judy Garland. We are lucky enough that this evening was recorded live and complete and has been transforming fans for the last 50 years to front row seats to hear and experience Judy Garland, her charm, charisma, presence and her truly marvelous voice in full form.

New York Herald Tribune reported on that evening this way: “There was an extra bonus at Carnegie Hall last night, Judy Garland sang.” New York Post said: “Last night the magnetism was circulating from the moment she stepped on stage.”

All accounts of that night hailed the Carnegie Hall concert as a triumph.

Variety, the periodical of record for the show business industry, reported: “New York’s Carnegie Hall was supercharged on both sides of the footlights Sunday evening … Pandemonium broke loose and a standing ovation stalled the song fest for several moments. After her twenty-fourth number of the evening, she halted the tumultuous applause demanding still another encore … Few singers around can get as much out of a song as Miss Garland … The tones are clear, the phrasing is meaningful and the vocal passion is catching. In fact, the audience couldn’t resist anything she did. The aisles were jammed during the encore … she followed with two additional numbers ‘After You’ve Gone’ and ‘Chicago’ which brought her song bag for the evening up to 26 numbers.”

“Two hours of pow,” was how Judy Garland described the event.

Clearly Judy’s performance at Carnegie Hall was a milestone in the life and career of a performer who had seen many successes in her lifetime. Judy had already experienced comebacks many times before. Today, 50 years later, people are still raving about this concert, no matter if they have heard it hundreds of times or for the first time. Even those who might not be Judy Garland fans (say it ain’t so) are hooked by this concert. It’s particularly wonderful given the fact that a year-and-a-half earlier Judy Garland had nearly died.

“Judy At Carnegie Hall” remains her biggest selling recording. It originally stayed on the charts for 94 weeks — 13 at number one — and won her five Grammy Awards, including Best Female Vocal Performance and Album of the Year (the first time a woman to win this category). Today it is still in print and a very popular selling CD and music download.

To listen to it is to re-live what truly is the greatest night in show business history sung by the greatest entertainer in show business, Judy Garland. If you haven’t heard it, do yourself a favor and listen. If you have, listen again. You’ll smile, you’ll laugh, you’ll cry. You will love it. : :

Kneehigh's The Umbrellas of Cherbourg has certainly made a life-long celebrity friend of Liza Minnelli, who once recorded a version of the screen-to-stage musical's Oscar-winning song "I Will Wait for You".

Having attended the press night for Michel Legrand's 1964 French film adaptation on 22 March (previews from 5 March), she recently returned to meet the cast and have cabaret star Meow Meow show her how to dance "Di Gue Ding Ding".

Adapted and directed by Kneehigh artistic director Emma Rice with a translation by Sheldon Harnick The Umbrellas of Cherbourg is "a French romance that just happens to be sung". The production's cast includes two-time Olivier Award winner Joanna Riding alongside Carly Bawden and Andrew Durand as romantic leads Genevieve and Guy.

The Umbrellas of Cherbourg transferred to the West End following a try-out run at Leicester's Curve Theatre. It was announced last week that the show will close on 21 May 2011, cutting short what had initially been billed as a 30-week season at the Gielgud Theatre.

Taking a look at the first 'Arthur'

http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/11098/1137759-60.stm
Friday, April 08, 2011

By Barbara Vancheri, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Release date:

July 17, 1981. In Pittsburgh, it opened at the Squirrel Hill, Denis, Showcase Cinemas West and North, and Cinemette East.

Its stars: Dudley Moore (below) is drunken millionaire playboy Arthur Bach, and Sir John Gielgud his scene-stealing, starchy butler. Liza Minnelli is the diner waitress and aspiring actress from Queens who wins his heart, while future "LA Law" partner Jill Eikenberry is the woman his father insists Arthur marry.

The meet-cute: While shopping in Bergdorf Goodman, Arthur spots Ms. Minnelli's Linda Marolla shoplift a tie for her father's birthday. He comes to her rescue outside the store when a security guard confronts her with evidence of sticky fingers.

The stakes: Arthur stands to lose $750 million if he doesn't agree to the arranged marriage. As his grandmother, Martha (Geraldine Fitzgerald), tells him, "You are too old to be poor. You don't know how."
The world according to Hobson: When Arthur announces he's going to take a bath, the butler dryly replies, "I'll alert the media." Later, he accompanies Arthur to his father's office: "Lower your voice, Arthur, and sit up. Stop being so nervous. Later on, we'll get ice cream." And he cautions his charge: "Poor drunks do not find love, Arthur. Poor drunks have very few teeth. They urinate outdoors. They freeze to death in summer."

What we said at the time: " 'Arthur' is an urbane, carefree comedy. It amuses with snappy dialogue, sophisticated jokes and a joyous attitude toward life, love and the pursuit of happiness."

Box office: "Arthur" was the most successful comedy and fourth biggest draw of 1981, behind "Raiders of the Lost Ark," "On Golden Pond" and "Superman II." It grossed $95.5 million in North America. That's roughly $231 million in 2011 dollars.
Oscar love: "Arthur" went two for four. Mr. Moore lost the best actor statuette to "On Golden Pond" patriarch Henry Fonda, while supporting actor nominee Gielgud won, edging James Coco from "Only When I Laugh," Ian Holm from "Chariots of Fire," Jack Nicholson from "Reds" and Howard E. Rollins Jr. from "Ragtime."
The comedy lost the gold for original screenplay but won for its memorable song, "Arthur's Theme (Best That You Can Do)."

Rating and runtime: PG and 97 minutes.
