Comedy drama starring Liza Minnelli as Mary Ann, or “Pookie”, a kooky college student who forces herself on shy young undergraduate Jerry, played by Wendell Burton. As the young couple’s relationship progresses, Jerry must choose whether to immerse himself in vulnerable Pookie’s lonely world or explore his own path. A touching and charming adaptation of John Nichols' 1965 novel of the same name, Minnelli’s polished performance earned her an Oscar nomination for best actress.

The Act Broadway musical starring Tony Award Winner Best Actress (1977) Liza Minnell
During the summer of 1961, Minnelli was an apprentice at the Cape Cod Melody Tent, Hyannis, MA. She appeared in the chorus of Flower Drum Song and played the part of Muriel in Take Me Along. Minnelli began performing professionally at age 17, in 1963, in an Off-Broadway revival of the musical Best Foot Forward, for which she received the Theatre World Award. The next year, her mother invited Minnelli to perform with her at the London Palladium. She turned to Broadway at 19, and in 1965 she became the youngest woman ever to win a leading actress Tony Award for Flora the Red Menace. It was the first time she worked with the musical duo John Kander and Fred Ebb.
The Act is a musical with a book by George Furth, lyrics by Fred Ebb, and music by John Kander.
It was written to showcase the talents of Kander and Ebb favorite Liza Minnelli, who portrayed Michelle Craig, a fading film star attempting a comeback as a Las Vegas singer. The musical premiered on Broadway in 1977.
The Act played out-of-town tryouts for fifteen weeks in Chicago, San Francisco, and Los Angeles.[1] The musical opened on Broadway on October 29, 1977 at the Majestic Theatre, where it ran for 233 performances and six previews. Directed by Martin Scorsese, choreographed by Ron Lewis, with costumes by Halston, the cast included Barry Nelson and Wayne Cilento.[2] The New York Times reviewer wrote that "'The Act' is precisely what its name implies: It is an act, and a splendid one.

LIZA MINNELLI AT 19: UNPUBLISHED PHOTO'S OF A SHOW BUSINESS LEGEND!
http://life.time.com/icons/liza-minnelli-at-19-unpublished-photos-of-a-show-business-legend/#4
In March 1965, when LIFE photographer Bill Eppridge spent time on assignment with Judy Garland’s enormously talented daughter, Liza Minnelli was just turning 19 and launching a titanic career of her own: she was about to debut on Broadway in Flora the Red Menace, in a role that would make her the youngest woman ever to win a Tony Award for lead actress. (Also on the show’s creative team: composer John Kander and lyricist Fred Ebb, who collaborated for the first time on Flora. They would team up in the future on such Broadway classics as Cabaret — later made into a movie starring Minnelli, of course, in her Oscar-winning role as Sally Bowles — and Chicago.
Liza allowed Eppridge into her spirited rehearsals, and even invited him to her birthday party at a swinging New York discotheque. LIFE wound up publishing just one of Eppridge’s photos. Here, in tribute to Minnelli and her enduring career, LIFE.com presents an entire series of marvelous, previously unpublished images of a legend in the making.
Liza, of course, was no stranger to show business — she had performed with her mother at the London Palladium, appeared on TV variety shows and done a little work Off-Broadway — but Flora the Red Menace would be her highest-profile role to date, the gig that would nudge her out of the shadow of her famous parents and into her own spotlight.
Of Minnelli’s opening-night performance in Flora, LIFEwrote: “She acted and danced with an awkward, captivating charm, threw out ‘What-am-I-doing-here?’ looks, sang in a voice that boomed and belted, quivered sweetly, and occasionally got out of control — which only added to her likability… She certainly did look like her mother several rainbows ago. When she sang, there were echoes of Judy, too — the old catches and wavers and throbs that made a song sound like as if it were going through a nervous breakdown. But soon Judy’s image faded and Liza’s came into focus.”
In the decades since Eppridge made these wonderful, initmate shots of the budding star, Liza has performed at the world’s most famous concert halls, racked up countless awards for her singing and acting and delighted new generations of fans with scene-stealing appearances in contemporary pop culture touchstones like Arrested Development. But the times she had in her early years truly were something special. As Liza herself told LIFE in 1965: “Eighteen is great, but 19 is best of all. That’s when you’re opening in your first Broadway show.”
Unpublished. Shoes kicked off, head thrown back, 19-year-old Liza Minnelli belts out a song for birthday party guests in 1965. From LIFE's report: "When a friend scolded her for singing for free she said, 'I don't care, I sing for me.'"

Hamlisch died last week in Los Angeles aged 68.
Other guests included Idina Mazel, Kelli O'Hara, Raul Esparza, Leslie Ughams, Richard Gere and Tony Danza.
His funeral was held at Congregation Emanu-El, a prominent synagogue where George Gershwin's funeral was held in 1937.
Hamlisch's evocative music helped define some of the most iconic works in Hollywood history.
The three-time Oscar winner, who wrote the classic Barbra Streisand torch song The Way We Were, was also the composer behind the West End and Broadway hit musical A Chorus Line.
As well as his hat-trick of Oscars, the prolific composer won four Grammys, four Emmys, a Tony and three Golden Globes during a career that spanned over four decades.
He composed music for more than 40 films, including Sophie's Choice, Ordinary People, The Spy Who Loved Me, Take the Money and Run, Three Men and a Baby and, most recently, The Informant.

In 1973, Hamlisch became only the second person after filmmaker Billy Wilder in 1980 to win three Academy Awards in the same evening.
He got two Oscars for Best Original Dramatic Score and Best Original Song for The Way We Were and the third for Best Original Song Score and/or Adaptation of Scott Joplin's music for The Sting, the blockbuster favourite starring Paul Newman and Robert Redford.
Critics hailed his non-obtrusive composing style for complementing the films of a diverse group of directors including Woody Allen, Steven Soderbergh and Alan Pakula.
His most well known collaboration was with Barbra Streisand.
As well as penning her signature love anthem The Way We Were, he wrote the score for her 1996 film The Mirror Has Two Faces and won two Emmys as musical director of her 1994 TV concert special.
His other stage work included The Goodbye Girl and The Sweet Smell of Success. The suddenness of his death took even some close friends by surprise.

He'd signed a three-year contract with the Pasadena Symphony and Pops orchestra in California and was involved in a string of other ventures, including a film about Liberace starring Michael Douglas and Matt Damon.
'He'd pulled a back muscle recently, but there was nothing serious,' Pasadena orchestra president Melinda Shea told the Los Angeles Times.
'He had some really wonderful new endeavours. It's such a tragedy that this happened when he was still so young.'
Hamlisch was due to fly to Nashville, Tennessee, this week to see a production of his popular musical The Nutty Professor.
