Liza Minnelli In AND THE OSCAR GOES TO... On TCM, 2/1

Broadway and Hollywood legend Liza Minnelli is one of many starry participants in the new awards season-centric TCM documentary AND THE OSCAR GOES TO..., premiering this weekend on the noted movie lover's cable channel. The official description of AND THE OSCAR GOES TO... is as follows: "On the opening night of its annual 31 Days of Oscar festival, TCM presents the world premiere of And the Oscar Goes To... (2014), a new documentary tracing the history of the Academy Awards. Produced by Telling Pictures, Inc., in association with the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and Hollywood Newsreel, the special is written, directed and produced by Oscar®-winning filmmakers Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman, with Christopher Pavlick and Rick Spalla also producing. The documentary is one of a series of programming events leading up to the TCM 20th anniversary in April 2014. CNN Films will air the encore presentation of the documentary on CNN, following the film's first broadcast on TCM. In telling the story of the gold-plated statuette that became the film industry's most coveted prize, And the Oscar Goes To... traces the history of the Academy itself, which began in 1927 when Louis B. Mayer, then head of MGM, led other prominent members of the industry in forming this professional honorary organization. Two years later the Academy began bestowing awards, which were nicknamed "Oscar" and quickly came to represent the pinnacle of cinematic achievement. The documentary features reminiscences of such Oscar® winners as Steven Spielberg (Schindler's List, 1993; Saving Private Ryan, 1998), George Clooney (Syriana, 2005), Helen Mirren (The Queen, 2006), Ben Kingsley (Gandhi, 1982), Liza Minnelli (Cabaret, 1972), Whoopi Goldberg (Ghost, 1990), Tom Hanks (Philadelphia, 1993; Forrest Gump, 1994), Cher (Moonstruck, 1987), Jon Voight (Coming Home, 1978), Ellen Burstyn (Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore, 1974), Benicio Del Toro (Traffic, 2000) and Jennifer Hudson (Dreamgirls, 2006). Vintage clips show other recipients including Janet Gaynor (Sunrise, 1927), James Stewart (The Philadelphia Story, 1940), Vivien Leigh (Gone With the Wind, 1939; A Streetcar Named Desire, 1951), Jack Lemmon (Mister Roberts, 1955; Save the Tiger, 1973) and Elizabeth Taylor (Butterfield 8, 1960; Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? , 1966). In addition to directors and performers, tribute is also paid to technical achievements including those in art direction, cinematography, editing, music, makeup and costume design."

Faves On Faves! Jared Leto Kicked It With Liza Minnelli...

Just when we thought that Jared Leto’s shirtless Mexican vacay and Golden Globe nomination-filled life couldn’t get any more epic, the Thirty Seconds To Mars frontman drops this photo of him casually chilling with Liza Minnelli on Instagram.
(BTW, that noise you might’ve just heard? That’s the uncharted octave-exploring sound we make when our pop cultural worlds COLLIDE. We’ll warn you next time.)
Just in case you’re not totally up to speed on Ms. Minnelli’s iconic status — SHAME! — the E.G.O.T.-winner is an effing big deal. Aside from being Judy Garland’s daughter, she’s pretty much dominated the performing arts for the past 60 years.
Hence, why Jared paid homage to Liza in his caption, “Me and the legendary Liza Minnelli.” But, enough about the past, what about the future? Could this photo possibly imply that there’s a COLLABO between the two on the way?!?!
Listen, we’ve seen Liza get down to Beyoncé’s “Single Ladies” during the wedding scene in “Sex And The City 2.” We’re pretty sure she could handle all the headbanging and stage-diving Jared regular whips out in his videos.
The question is, could J-man keep up with this perfectly executed “Mein Herr” chair work?

Liza Loves "Dallas Buyers Club"...

Liza Loves “Dallas Buyers Club,” Offers Her Oscar To Matthew McConaughey /
I have nothing to do with this film except that I am a fan of how it was done, of the insight and the way they played these characters. And the fact that you were watching something that wasn’t necessarily comfortable but you could not stop watching. It drew you in, whether you wanted it to or not, and that’s magic. That’s magic. I mean, the last one [that did that for me] was On the Waterfront! You, crazy Matthew, losing all of that weight — it’s one thing to lose all of that weight and to look like that — that’s harrowing enough — but then to run like you did, with a body like that? And Jared, I mean, everything that you did — all of the placements, every single second — I felt wonderful for you, proud of you and sorry for you all at the same time, which I think one only feels for your friends. And Jennifer [Garner] was great — she was just f—ing great! (Laughs.) I don’t know what else to say. I haven’t seen a movie like that in so long, and I’m so proud to be able to tell everybody. And honey, if you don’t win the Academy Award, I’m giving you mine!” – The legendary entertainer, who won a best actress Oscar for 1972′s Cabaret, who hosted a soiree for Dallas Buyers Club to help boost its appeal with Academy members

Liza Minnelli Offers To Give Matthew McConaughey Her Oscar If He Doesn't...(VIDEO)

Liza Minnelli to Matthew McConaughey: 'If You Don't Win the Academy Award, I'm Giving You Mine'

With the Oscar nomination voting period winding down, Focus Features gathered several dozen East Coast voters for a lunch in celebration of its primary Oscar contender, "Dallas Buyers Club."http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/race/liza-minnelli-matthew-mcconaughey-you-6
On Monday afternoon, with the Oscar nomination voting period winding down -- voting ends at 5 p.m. PT on Wednesday, Jan. 8 -- Focus Features threw a Peggy Siegal-coordinated luncheon for East Coast Academy members at New York City's Monkey Bar restaurant to celebrate its primary Oscar contender, Dallas Buyers Club, and its stars Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto, who were in attendance. The gathering was hosted by legendary Oscar winner Liza Minnelli, who welcomed guests -- including several dozen voters from across the branches of the Academy, among them actress Dana Ivey, animator Jimmy Picker, casting director Bonnie Timmermann, writer Alfred Uhry, publicist Susan Senk, documentary filmmaker Barbara Kopple and producer/former Focus chief James Schamus -- with a rousing endorsement of the film. Noting that she has "nothing to do with this film except that I am a fan," she cheered its performances and generated considerable applause when she told McConaughey, "Honey, if you don't win the Academy Award, I'm giving you mine!"

The luncheon was intended to help continue the low-budget drama's strong momentum of late. Thus far, it has outperformed even the most optimistic of expectations by scoring a Critics' Choice nom for best picture, a SAG nom for best ensemble, a PGA nom for best produced film and a WGA nom for best original screenplay to go with best actor and best supporting actor Critics' Choice, SAG and Golden Globe noms for McConaughey and Leto, respectively.
"I have nothing to do with this film except that I am a fan of how it was done, of the insight and the way they played these characters. And the fact that you were watching something that wasn't necessarily comfortable but you could not stop watching. It drew you in, whether you wanted it to or not, and that's magic. That's magic.
