Tony Award nominee Mikhail Baryshnikov was honored at the NYC Dance Alliance Foundation's Bright Lights Shining Stars gala Sept. 5. Tony winner Liza Minnelli presented him with the Ambassador for the Arts Award.
The ceremony at NYU's Skirball Center for the Performing Arts served as a fundraiser for the NYC Dance Alliance Foundation.
The gala included performances from the Broadway and dance communities, and the presentation of the Ambassador for the Arts Award featured a special dance tribute to Baryshnikov as well as a donation to the Baryshnikov Arts Center. Teenage student dancers from across the United States also received scholarship recognition.
Directed by Joe Lanteri, the evening's performances featured the American Ballet Theatre (Sarah Lane and Sascha Radetsky), the New York City Ballet (Tiler Peck and Robert Fairchild), Complexions Contemporary Ballet, Ballet Next and Ballet Hispanico.
Lorna Luft (Promises, Promises, Paper Mill's White Christmas) also appeared at the gala, as well as Tony Award winner Ron Rifkin (Cabaret), TV reality star Ramona Singer and Tony Award-winning choreographer Jerry Mitchell.
