Barbra Streisand was given the Film Society of Lincoln Center’s Chaplin award at Avery Fisher Hall Monday night, hailed from the stage as a “true legend and hometown girl.”
“Ever since I can remember, I’ve been called ‘bossy and opinionated,’ ” said Streisand, the first woman to write, direct, produce and star in an American film.
“Well, I guess I am. Three cheers for bossy women!”

She was handed the award, which honored her achievements in nearly a half-century of film, by her friend, former President Bill Clinton. Pals and costars paid tribute to her at the FSLC’s 40th Chaplin gala.

“She’s a good lady and a helluva broad!” said Liza Minnelli before serenading the star with “Isn’t This Better” from “Funny Lady.”
Streisand, who turns 71 Wednesday, said that growing up in Brooklyn she “always wanted to be an actress.” When she couldn’t get auditions, “music saved me.”
